TO BE A EUROPEAN MUSLIM addresses some of the fundamental issues born of the several million strong Muslim presence in Europe in our times. Based on a thorough study of Islamic sources, it seeks to answer basic questions about European Muslims' social, political, cultural and legal integration. The study shows that it is possible to lead life as a practising Muslim while `living together' in multi-faith, pluralistic European nation states. TARIQ RAMADAN teaches philosophy (College of Geneva) and Islamic Studies (Fribourg University). Through his several writings and lectures he has contributed substantially to the debate on the issues of Islam in the West and in the contemporary world. He is actively engaged as expert on Islamic revival and the identity and challenges of Muslims living as a minority. Among his books are: Les Musulmans dans la Laical: Responsabilites et Droits des Musulmans dans les Societes Occidentales (1994), Islam, Le Face a Face des Civilisations: Quelle Projet pour Quelle Modernite? (1995), De la Souffrance: Etudes Nietzscheene et Islamique (1998), Muslims in France: The Way Towards Coexsistance (Islamic Foundation, Leicester, 1999) and Pent-on Vivre Avec L'Islam, with Jacques Neirynck (Favre, 1999).
